Exercises For Elbow Bursitis

Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa, A small bag filled with fluid that cushions and protects your joints. The olecranon bursa, or elbow, is located on the elbow joint between the bone and the skin. Bursitis can occur from a trauma to your elbow, infection, prolonged periods of pressure or repetitive activities. Your elbow may become inflamed, painful, red, or difficult to move. Exercises for elbow bursitis may be prescribed by your doctor. to accelerate recovery or as part of a rehabilitation program after surgery.

Types

Exercises for elbow bursitis are made to stretch and strengthen the muscles of your arm. You can start doing these exercises once you have no more pain. Stretching exercises should include a wrist extender, a wrist flexor, a biceps stretch, tricep and pronation / supination. Hold each stretch for 10 seconds and repeat six times. To stretch the wrist extensor, straighten the injured arm and lift it up in front of your body. Use your opposite hand to move your hand over your injured arm down so that your fingers are facing the ground. You will feel a stretch in the upper part of your forearm. The wrist flexor stretch is performed in the same way, except that the hand of your injured arm is pulled up so that your fingers are facing the ceiling. This stretch will feel on the underside of your forearm.

Stretching exercises show include wrist extensions and bicep twists. For these exercises you will need a light weight that weighs 2 to 4 pounds. To do doll extensions, sit in front of a table. Place your injured forearm on it with your palm facing the ground. Let your hand hang over the edge of the table. Slowly lift the weight up with your wrist and then return to the starting position. Repeat 10 times. You can progress to heavier weights if you do not feel pain.

Time frame

Recovery time for bursitis varies from person to person. For some, the symptoms are resolved in 10 days. Others may have symptoms that last more than two weeks. The length of recovery time is usually determined by the amount of time that passes before starting treatment. The longer you wait to start treatment, the later your recovery time will be. Chronic cases can also be more difficult to treat.

Considerations

You can return to regular activities once your symptoms have resolved, you have regained strength and have the full range of elbow movement. If you experience any pain when you return to the activity, you must decrease or stop it and apply ice.

Prevention

To prevent elbow bursitis, you should avoid the activity that caused it if possible. If you play a sports, use elbow pads to protect your elbow from falls or direct hits. Also, take regular breaks during the activity to avoid abusive use of the joint.

Warning

Bursitis caused by an infection should be treated immediately by a doctor, as the infection could potentially spread to other areas of the body. Symptoms of an infection include redness, warmth, pain and pus.
