Martial Arts Kicklist

Kicking differentiates martial arts from others fighting styles. The world of martial arts has many different types of kicks. There are kicks spinning, jumping and flying. Some kicks hit an attacker in the shin, and others hit him in the head. Before attempting more difficult kicking techniques, it is a good idea to understand the basic kicks.

Instant front kick

The instant front kick, often referred to simply as a front kick, is widely used in martial arts. To execute this kick, raise the knee and aim at your target. Extend the leg and kick quickly on the target with the ball of your foot. Remove the leg after kicking the target. The kick is made with a sudden movement. A priority goal for the instant front kick is the opponent's solar plexus. You can also kick an attacker in the groin with the instep of your foot during the execution of this technique. The instant front kick is often used to pigeonhole an opponent with additional kicks and punches.

Side kick

The side kick is another popular kick in martial arts. It is often taught in Korean and Japanese styles. Turn your body sideways to your target to perform the side kick. Lift the knee and kick directly to your side with the bottom of the heel. Keep the kicking foot approximately parallel to the ground. You can perform the side kick in an instant push or loud snap. You can effectively stop an imminent attack by directing your side kick in the middle section of an opponent. If you are flexible enough, you can get a side kick to an opponent's head. Sometimes, the outer edge of the foot is used to reach a goal when a side kick is executed.

Half moon kick

The half moon kick can be used as an offensive or defensive maneuver. To perform the half moon kick, raise the left knee in front of you. Hit with the left foot in a circular movement in the clockwise direction. Hit a target with the inside edge of your left foot. If you execute a half-moon kick with the right foot, kick in one direction counter-clockwise. Hit a target with the inside edge of your right foot. A priority goal for the half moon kick is the head of an opponent. Defensively, a half moon kick can be used to block an incoming attack. For example, if an attacker hits you with a stick, you can hit the weapon sideways by kicking the attacker's hand.

Half Moon Reverse Kick

The half moon reverse kick is just the opposite of the half moon kick. Lift the left knee in front of you. This time, kick with the left foot in a counter-clockwise motion. Hit the target with the outer edge of your left foot. On the right side, kick with a clockwise movement and strike with the outer edge of your right foot. The half moon reverse kick is usually thrown at the head of an opponent. This is a quick, powerful technique that can be difficult to block. Your opponent may think you are going in one direction, when suddenly you hit him in the head in the other direction. Like the half moon kick, the half moon reverse kick can also be used to block incoming attacks.
