Symptoms Of The Fifth Month Of Pregnancy

At five months of pregnancy (20 weeks) you've already been halfway through gestation. Also, you are eight weeks from the beginning of the third quarter. Your baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces and is about 6 1/2 inches long from the head to the bottom and about 10 inches from the head to the heel (the length of a banana), says BayCenter. The symptoms vary according to the woman and may also be different in later pregnancies.

Heartburn

Heartburn is a common symptom of the second trimester of pregnancy. The growing baby is approximately at the level of your belly button and pushes towards the stomach. This causes stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) to rise into the esophagus, which causes heartburn. Some over-the-counter preparations, such as Tums and Mylanta, are considered safe to use during pregnancy. If these medications do not relieve heartburn, consult a doctor. If left untreated, chronic heartburn can cause damage to the esophagus.

Leg cramps

The pressure exerted by the uterus on the veins that return blood from the legs to the heart can cause cramping, especially at night. Stretching before and after bedtime helps relieve cramps. Walking and light exercise can also provide relief from painful leg cramps.

Braxton-Hicks contractions

During the second trimester, the uterus begins to practice for the big day. Braxton-Hicks contractions are slight contractions in the lower abdomen and groin that appear and disappear without regularity. If contractions intensify or become irregular, contact your obstetrician immediately. This could indicate a premature birth.

Bleeding gums

At five months of pregnancy you may experience bleeding gums. This occurs because of the increase in blood circulation. The use of a soft toothbrush can help protect your gums. Make sure you do not interrupt your dental care routine during pregnancy.

Changes in the skin

You may begin to notice the appearance of stretch marks in the abdomen, breasts, arms, or thighs. The skin may itch as it is stretched. There is no magic cream to prevent or cure stretch marks. Use a good moisturizer, such as cocoa butter (cocoa butter) and avoid hot showers because they dry the skin a lot. The color and size of the stretch marks will be attenuated after pregnancy.
