The acai berry is mentioned in the media and is even endorsed by some celebrities. This fruit is said to be relatively safe, according to eMedTV, but some people may have problems. There are several warnings about the acai berry that you should know before eating this fruit or taking a supplement that contains it. It is also a good idea to consult a doctor before using it.


Antioxidants are types of dietary substances, such as the nutrients of vitamin C, selenium, beta carotene, and vitamin E. They slow or prevent the oxygen damage caused by free radicals, in turn repairing any current damage and preventing future damage, according to the American Dietetic Association. The acai berry is taken by many people because of its antioxidant effects. However, its antioxidant effects can interfere with the action of chemotherapy drugs and also with radiation treatments. The antioxidants found in this fruit could decrease the effectiveness of these two treatments for cancer. The acai berry has not been proven to help fight cancer in humans, reports the PhytoScience research group.

Allergic reaction

Acai is a food, so there is potential for an allergic reaction to occur. Food allergies occur when the immune system considers that a specific food is an invader and harmful to the body. When a food is considered harmful, the body tries to protect itself by creating IgE antibodies. When the food is consumed again, these antibodies, together with additional chemical agents, are released. This can result in changes in the respiratory system, the skin, the cardiovascular system and the gastrointestinal system. If you have an allergic reaction to the acai berry, you may experience hives, itching, unexplained rash, shortness of breath or wheezing or swelling of the throat, tongue, mouth or lips.

Stimulant effects

The acai berry contains theobromine, a chemical with stimulants such as caffeine. For most people, consuming 200 to 300 milligrams of caffeine a day is not harmful, but consuming too much, such as 500 to 600 milligrams per day, can cause adverse side effects, according to the Mayo Clinic. These side effects include insomnia, restlessness, nausea, muscle tremors, anxiety, nervousness, irritability, headaches, irregular or rapid heartbeat and gastrointestinal problems.
