When it comes to breakfast, the most attractive meals in the morning are usually the that you can buy and eat on the way to work. Clearly, cooking egg whites does not take long, but it is much easier to go through the drive-thru of the golden arches. According to a 2010 survey, one in five Americans choose to start the day at McDonalds.
An egg McMuffin, a classic breakfast product that has been on the menu since 1975, may seem like a healthy option with its five simple ingredients, including high-protein eggs that promise to feed in the morning, but to tell the truth, you can find about 50 ingredients in this deceptive sandwich. Keep reading to find out exactly what you are eating.
THE SUSPICIOUS: McDonald's Egg McMuffin
THE DETECTIVES: Mira and Jayson Calton, Ph. D., a husband and wife team, whose latest book "Rich Food, Poor Food)", the sequel to his book "Naked Calories (Calories Naked)", arrives at bookstores in February.
NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION: 300 calories, 12 g of fat, 30g of carbohydrates, 18g of protein, 780 mg of sodium.
INGREDIENTS FROM THE LIST: English muffin, eggs, pasteurized American cheese, Canadian-style bacon, liquid margarine.
- MUFFIN ENGLISH: Carbohydrates are not always enemies, but in this case, they really are. This roll can contain up to eight genetically modified ingredients: enriched flour, high fructose corn syrup, yellow corn flour, corn flour, citric acid, soy lecithin, soybean oil and / or canola oil. That is, in addition to water, yeast, and 2% or less of the following: salt, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, rice flour, barley malt, artificial / natural flavorings, dough conditioners, calcium sorbate and potassium propionate (preservatives), and even more soya lecithin. Among them, the worst ingredients can be:
a) Unbleached wheat flour. Wheat is not what it used to be. For the past 40 years, farmers have been manipulating the gene to produce a two-meter-tall dwarf wheat crop, which contains glial protein, which produces a compound similar to morphine that goes to brain receptors and causes eating up 400 additional calories per day. Glia has also been linked to inflammatory problems from the irritable bowel to heart disease. That's not all: there is also wheat gluten, which can cause digestive problems, headaches, mental confusion, fatigue and other symptoms, and amylopectin A, which is responsible for the "belly of wheat" (those "rolls" in your stomach).
b) Azodicarbonamide. This difficult to pronounce ingredient has been banned in Australia, the United Kingdom and in most European countries. In Singapore you can get sentenced to up to 15 years in prison and sanctioned with almost half a million dollars in fines for the use of this substance as an ingredient. However, in the USA UU, this allergen that causes asthma is completely legal and is often used in foamed plastics, such as yoga mats and in sports shoe soles, as well as in flour as a bleaching agent. Apparently, the US markets UU Impatient can not wait a week for the wheat to whiten naturally.
c) High fructose corn syrup. The usual: stay away from these things! Why? In addition to giving you a high level of sugar, it depletes your body of essential minerals and increases food cravings, which can lead to many serious problems such as obesity.
d) EADTM. Abbreviation of diacetyl tartaric acid esters of monoglycerides. This dough conditioner serves to make all the buns that are cooked look the same. Although it is approved by the FDA, it has been linked to fibrosis of the heart muscles and adrenal overgrowth in animals.
EGGS: Do they come from farms and natural pastures? Do not! These category A eggs, according to the USDA, do not come from happy, natural chickens. In fact, they come from chickens that have been locked in dark factories where they do not even have room to spread their wings. They never see the light, which means a lack of vitamin D, and their diet consists, in large part, only of soy and corn. The hens of natural farms with healthy diets, on the other hand, have seven times more beta carotene, three times more vitamin E, two times more omega-3, and two thirds more vitamin A.
CHEESE: Like Factory chickens, there are no happy cows here either. This highly processed dairy product probably comes from a cow that has been treated with synthetic hormones (rBGH) to increase milk production by 10%. This practice is not only dangerous for the animal (they are clumsy, infertile, and suffer from infected udders), but also for the consumer, which is why it has been banned in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Europe. Human beings who are exposed to this milk (and its dairy products) readily absorb its byproduct, similar to insulin 1 (IGF-1), which has been associated with breast, colon, and prostate cancer. This cheese may contain yellow dye 6, a dye that is banned in Norway and Sweden, due to compounds that cause cancer.
BACONIAL Canadian style. Do you think that pigs get something better? They probably never touch a pasture and eat a strict diet of genetically modified foods. Therefore, this pork is not going to be a good source of meat.It is even worse when the other ingredients are added, such as sugar (only to make it more addictive), salt, sodium lactate, sodium phosphate, natural flavor (vegetable), sodium diacetate and nitrites (preservatives). The most dangerous content could be sodium nitrate (used to rinse and preserve bacon), since it contains residual toxic heavy metals, such as arsenic and lead.
LIQUID MARGARINE. Each ingredient mentioned above has been prepared in liquid margarine, which is made up of 15 ingredients, including soy lecithin and, approximately, six genetically modified ingredients, such as partially hydrogenated soybean oil (also known as trans fat), which the cause about 50,000 premature deaths from heart attacks, per year, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. Trans fats can also increase the chance of getting cancer, obesity, birth defects, diabetes, depression, asthma, osteoporosis, and more.
The verdict: Guilty!
