Food gives you the nutrients and vitamins that give your body energy to pass the day. Unfortunately, many people find that they feel tired after eating a meal. There are several possible reasons why you may feel sleepy after eating.
Your food choices
One of the reasons why you feel so tired after eating may be due to the type of food you eat. Your body has difficulty digesting processed foods, sweets, refined carbohydrates and high-fat foods. When you eat, the body breaks down food immediately into smaller parts that are then absorbed by your blood and lead to energize and feed the cells. The more healthy your food choices are, the more nutrients can be delivered effectively to re-feed your body and work properly. Junk food, like chips and cookies, have no nutritional value. These foods tend to give you quick energy, but they do not satisfy hunger for long, which ultimately makes you feel tired.
The amount of food you eat
The amount of food you eat may be another reason why you feel so tired after eating. If you eat fresh and healthy foods such as whole grains, nuts and fresh fruits and vegetables, whatever the amount you eat, you will not normally feel tired. However, eating many processed and heavy foods (such as meat) will undoubtedly make you feel uncomfortably full and fatigued.
Irregularity in eating habits
Many people skip breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast (or any other meal) will make your body feel weak and tired, which often leads to poor food choices. Skipping meals often causes people to grab the foods that are most available when they are hungry. These foods tend to be unhealthy junk foods.
Allergies to food
If you are eating properly and you still feel very tired after meals, you may be allergic to certain types of foods. Celiac disease is a kind of food allergy with gluten, which includes many commonly eaten foods such as wheat, barley and many condiments. People who have food allergies often experience excessive bloating and gas, constipation or diarrhea, in addition to fatigue. You may need to consult your doctor to receive a special analysis to determine the cause of your fatigue after eating.
